fic: lights go out

matrix fic! wow, it's been a while for this fandom. and... ~le gasp~ not slash! oh, the horror.

lights go out

When Switch and Apoc got together, it was almost an afterthought, the anticlimactic resolution of a not-too-complicated decision. Nobody wants to be celibate, after all, and the Nebuchadnezzar spent an awful lot of time away from Zion and other potential bedmates. As far as women went, the choices were limited to Switch and Trinity, and Switch might have been a little - all right, a lot - intimidating, but Trinity had that whole fixation on finding the One. Also, Switch was never really sure, but she thought Trinity might have been a little bit in love with Morpheus. It could have been just a father-daughter sort of thing, but it went way beyond simple mentorship. And everybody on the Nebuchadnezzar knew that Trinity was Morpheus' favorite.

Apoc wasn't exactly a prize piece of manflesh, either, but the pickings weren't really choice. Mouse was way too young, and just... ewww. Morpheus was definitely off-limits, both because he was the captain and because Trinity would have probably skewered anyone she thought unworthy of his affections without a second thought. Cypher bothered Switch for some reason she had never quite worked out, and he also had his creepy stalkerish obsession with Trinity. Switch might have wished him luck, except... well, she really didn't. Tank and Dozer both had more of a "leave the wife and kids at home" sort of attitude, and Switch wasn't about to put up with a man who couldn't take her as an equal. So that left Apoc. They'd both been woken up around the same time, after Trinity but before Cypher. They knew each other. It wasn't exactly rocket science to figure out where they were headed.

It was smart decision, even if it had been reached by mutual elimination. The sex was pretty good, and Switch didn't get as cold beneath her ratty blankets when there was a body giving off heat right beside her. Apoc was quiet most of the time, so he didn't get annoying like Cypher or Mouse, and when he talked he could be funny. There was a sort of comfort in having him with her when she ran "errands" for Morpheus. Apoc was a solid partner. She liked having someone she could trust to watch her back.

Switch was never really sure when she fell in love with Apoc, because by the time she realized it, it felt like she'd been in love with him forever. She never said anything, because it made her feel stupid and girly and she'd never been stupid or girly in her life, but she thought Apoc might have felt the same. She woke up one morning and he was tracing patterns on her skin with a weirdly intent look in his eyes. He said, your skin is the color of a dead fish's underbelly, not that either of them had ever really seen a dead fish or its belly, but she knew what he meant, and he said it like other men would speak poetry, like it meant, your skin is alabaster and marble and ivory all in one, and more beautiful than all three. They had sex that morning, and his stubble scratched her white skin red.

When Apoc dropped to the floor, Switch went down to her knees beside him, silent because she was already screaming inside her head. Trinity was shaking her head and Switch knew what it meant, and she said, not like this, but she thought, do it already you spineless traitor, I can't take you down for it so do it now, and not like this meant not without Apoc but Apoc was already gone.

Then Cypher pulled the plug, and the lights all went out.

Oh. This had three brilliant sentences. Oh. Wow.

did one of them involve dead fish? because I thought that was a brilliant simile, myself. especially since Switch really DOES have skin like a dead fish's underbelly. =)

YES. Hehehe. It was pretty much beautiful, that whole sentence - especially the part about being marble and alabaster, etc. at the same time. *nod*

~snuggles~ oh, Switch&Epoch. Their love is so unspoken, yet canonical. It's not just me, is it? they were totally screwing in the movie.

lol =P Well, maybe not totally screwing, but they fit each other. I loved the dead fish's underbelly simile. =)
